Ida's Idols

Eva Cassidy

Eva Cassidy

…was an American singer who only really became famous after she died of cancer in 1996 . She became only 33 years of age. Nowadays the, far too short, story of her life, can be read on many internet sites. Her father is still maintaining her own website..
Read the Guestbook. Fascinating!

A self assured, young woman, with an unheard musicality, who could not be forced into a box. Ida has in fact a lot in common with her. She sings only what she likes herself and she really does not care what other people think. Streisand next to Paul Simon, and why is that wrong? Record companies, producers they all tried to make Eva Cassidy fit in a genre. But for some artists that simply does not work. Eva sang Jazz but also Gospels, Blues but also Country, Rock and Ballads. She did not want an album or a performance with one kind of music, she wanted them all together. She was only interested in the beauty of a song and the content.
Nowadays there are 11 albums of Eva Cassidy available in Belgium. Her father made sure that also high quality demo versions and unplugged songs all found their place on an album. The last one “Simply Eva” contains several of her most famous songs in an acoustic setting and was released in 2011, 15 years after Eva passed away. But still today duets are made, with the present available technology, to make Eva Cassidy sing with well-known artists. For example Katie Melua did it with “What a Wonderful World” on her CD “The Katie Melua Collection” and recently on the new album “ GEMS” of Michael Bolton he sang “Fields of Gold” in a duet with Eva Cassidy.

Sting, who wrote this beautiful song, gave Eva’s CD to Michael Bolton with the words “If you ever want to hear the best ever version of this song, listen to this.” Ida has all CD’s of Eva Cassidy and sings every song of her when music is available. And that are already a lot. One day she wants to sing a duet in the studio with Eva herself. Eva singing first and Ida backing with second voice. She practices in her home studio every once and a while with Eva Cassidy’s version of Kathy’s song by Paul Simon and that sounds wonderful. Rights make it not possible yet to share it with you so on this site the song is recorded with Ida alone on both voices.

Jasperina de Jong

…is a famous Dutch singer, actress and comedian from Ida’s teenage years. Still today you can regularly hear scenes and songs of her on the Dutch radio. Guus Vleugel was the man who wrote most of her lyrics when she performed in the Cabaret group “Lurelei” and when the group stopped performing she kept working with him for many years. But also Ivo de Wijs and Lenneart Nijgh gave her songs to sing.

Jasperina was admired on stage with Dutch celebrities like Wim Sonneveld and Gerard Cox. She starred in several theater productions and musicals. She had her own television show, in which she showed short plays that are famous today.

Well-known songs in The Netherlands like de Minutenwals, Dobbe dobbe, dobbe, Call girl, De Wandelclub, Op één been kun je niet lopen, they are all prove of the unbelievable multi-faceted qualities of this woman, that Ida adores. And of whom she sings songs when the crowd wants it... in honor of Jasperina de Jong.
